A Walk a Day

4.1/5 (10 votes)

The popularity of walking as a fitness activity is growing by leaps and bounds.  Low risk and easy to start, walking has proved its health benefits in numerous studies.  An eight-year study of 13,000 people found that those who walked 30 minutes a day had a significantly lower risk of premature death than those who rarely exercised.

A regular walking program can help:

  • Reduce blood cholesterol
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Increase cardiovascular endurance
  • Boost bone strength
  • Burn calories and keep weight down
  • Improve your self-esteem
    Get moving

Beginning walkers can make their workouts less strenuous by limiting speed and distance.

The 10-minute walking with weights is a great place to start!  Even without weights, it rocks!

Smart Sunshine

Taking a few minutes to soak up some sunshine can put you in a better mood, say psychologists.

The sun can kick-start your day by increasing the brain's production of seratonin, a chemical that gives you a natural feeling of well-being.

The sun also helps your body synthesize vitamin D, which in turn gives you energy, and inhibits the body's production of melatonin, a sleep-inducing hormone.
So if you're feeling a little down in the dumps, head outside for a few moments of sunshine 5 to 10 minutes should do the trick.

Be sure not to catch too many rays, though. As everyone knows, excessive sun exposure can lead to, at best, premature aging of the skin and, at worst, deadly forms of skin cancer, not to mention the formation of cataracts in your eyes. So catch a couple mood-lifting rays and spread the sunshine indoors. And dont forget your sunscreen!
